Turkish PM will go to referendum if constitution talks fail

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday hinted he could seek a plebiscite on his party's own draft constitution next year if talks at the Turkish parliament over a new charter proved inconclusive. "I believe we will get a 'yes' vote from our nation if we hold a referendum. We will not face any difficulty in that sense," Erdogan told a press conference in Istanbul upon his return from a visit to the United States. Erdogan's remarks came just days after one of his deputies suggested that 2014 could see three votes -- local elections in March, presidential elections in August and a referendum on a new constitution in November. Lawmakers from the ruling Justice and Development Party and three opposition parties have been holding talks on a draft constitution but they have yet to make a major headway in their talks so far.    Turkey's current constitution was written following a military takeover in 1980. It has been amended numerous times since then.
