UK, Germany support newly formed Syrian coalition

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Tuesday said that their countries are welcoming the new Syrian Coalition, the opposition parties have agreed to form during their meeting in Doha. The European officials expressed their countries support of the coalition in statements to reporters on the sidelines of the second meeting of Arab and European ministers at the Arab League in Cairo today. UK’s Foreign Secretary said the formation of the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces was an “important milestone.” “We want the Syrian opposition to be inclusive, and to have support inside Syria and if they have this, yes, we will then recognize them as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people,” he added. Meanwhile, Germany’s Foreign minister said his country supports the newly-formed National Coalition of the Syrian Powers of Revolution and Opposition. “Germany will endeavor to support the efforts of the opposition towards unity and for an end to the violence,” Germany’s TV, Deutsche Welle (DW) quoted him as saying. “The agreement of the opposition on a common national coalition is an important step forward that must now prove to be a success,” he added.
