UN chief calls for end to all fighting in Yemen

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday that he hoped for an end to all fighting in Yemen and he welcomed the coalition's support for a quick resumption of the political process.

"I welcome the announcement by the coalition that they support a quick resumption of the political process in Yemen in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2016. I also welcome its stated commitment to protect civilians and enable the provision of humanitarian assistance to all Yemeni people," said Ban.

Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen resumed Wednesday, one day after announcing an end to the nearly month-long bombing campaign.

"I have taken note of the announcement yesterday by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners on April 21 to conclude these airstrikes. In fact, this morning when I read that report that fighting was resumed, I was very concerned about that," said Ban.

"I sincerely hope that there will be an end of fighting as soon as possible," Ban said. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1,080 people have been killed, and 4,352 injured between March 19 and April 20 in Yemen.

Humanitarian situation remains bleak.

Due to insecurity On Wednesday in Aden city and the spread of street fighting, one aid agency was unable to distribute household items to displaced people staying in schools, said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric at a daily briefing here Wednesday.

Another relief organization successfully delivered hygiene items to one of Aden's major public hospitals, Dujarric said.
