UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned a deadly attack at a university in northeastern Kenya.
Ban expressed hope the situation would be quickly brought under control without further harm to those being held, and he calls for those responsible for today’s attack to be swiftly brought to justice," according to a statement issued from UN spokesperson’s office.
The death toll in the attack on a university in northeastern Kenya on Thursday has risen to 147 and the siege has ended, the country's disaster response agency said.
The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre said the operation has ended.
Gunmen from the Somali youth movement had launched an armed attack earlier in the day on the campus of the university near Somalia border and had hostages.
The Somalia-based al-Shabaab militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry said four of the attackers had been killed, but an unknown number of gunmen were still in the building.
A curfew has been issued in parts of the country.
