UN condemns militanas attack in Somalia

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) Nicholas Kay on Thursday condemned the attack on a convoy of UN vehicles earlier today near the international airport in Mogadishu, Somalia, UN Spokesman Martin Nesirky told the daily press briefing.The Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack which killed at least six Somalis and injured scores more.Expressing his "appreciation to United Nations staff in Somalia for their continued dedication under difficult circumstances," Ban "remains determined to support the Somali Government in preventing such attacks and holding the perpetrators accountable," and "reaffirms the undeterred resolve of the United Nations to support the people and Federal Government of Somalia." Kay "strongly condemned" the attack and expressed "deep sorrow" at the deaths and injuries of Somali bystanders.A UN car was damaged but no UN staff were injured.
