UN envoy: Libya elections 'an extraordinary achievement'

The top U.N. envoy in Libya Monday called the country’s first parliamentary election in nearly half a century “an extraordinary achievement,” but he said there are “enormous” challenges ahead. Ian Martin told reporters at U.N. headquarters in a video press conference from Tripoli that Saturday’s vote for the 200-seat parliament was an important step. The new parliament will be tasked with forming a government, and Martin said it would be “very positive” if all groups that win substantial representation in the new parliament work together to reach agreement on a new government, and during the process, draft a new constitution.
