UN responsible for Palestinian refugees in Yarmouk

The international community and the United Nations are fully responsible for allowing humanitarian aid to reach the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Syria, a Palestinian official said on Friday.

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) asserts this responsibility, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said in a meeting with UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl.

Daesh militants have taken most of Yarmouk from rival groups while the Syrian army surrounds the district, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The camp, set up in 1957 to house Palestinians, has become a symbol of the desperate plight of people.

"Palestinians have been forced to live in refugee camps, that is not their choice," Erekat said.
