The UN refugee agency appealed to Kenya to continue hosting thousands of refugees, saying the situation that forced them to flee their countries are still unresolved.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called on the government to reconsider its decision to shut down the refugee camps and to avoid taking any action that might be at odds with its international obligations towards people needing sanctuary from danger and persecution.
The Government of Kenya announced earlier that it intended to end the hosting of refugees, citing economic, security and environmental burdens. A statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, said the Government had disbanded its Department of Refugee Affairs and was working on a mechanism for the closure of Kenya's refugee camps, a move that could affect as many as 600,000 lives.
