The UN High Commission for Human Rights (UNHCR) has opened an inquiry into the disappearance of thousands of people during Algeria's civil war in the early 1990s, High Commissioner Novathem Pillay said at a meeting with Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci in Algiers on Tuesday. A UNHCR working group will be in Algeria shortly to deal with the fight against terrorism, "and also with the issue of the disappeared", Pillay said. The issue of the disappeared is still an open wound in Algerian society, with the two parties to the conflict, the Algerian army and Islamic terrorists, accusing one another of using kidnapping and killing as a political weapon.
