UNSC renews Yemen sanctions' regime

UN Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted resolution 2204, renewing the measures imposed on Yemen sanctions' regime until February 26, 2016.
The Security Council reaffirmed in the resolution the need for full and timely implementation of the political transition following the comprehensive National Dialogue Conference, in line with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative and Implementation Mechanism, the Peace and National Partnership Agreement and in accordance with resolutions 2014, 2051 and 2140.
This came in determination that the situation in Yemen continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security.
The new resolution extended the mandate of the Panel of Experts until March 25, 2016, and expressed intention to review the mandate and take appropriate action regarding the further extension no later than February 25, 2016.
Therefore, the Council requested the Secretary General to take necessary administrative measures as expeditiously as possible to re-establish the Panel of Experts, in consultation with the Committee, for a period of 13 months from the date of this resolution, drawing, as appropriate, on the expertise of the members of the Panel established pursuant to resolution 2140.
The Council reaffirmed via the resolution, its intention to keep the situation in Yemen under continuous review and its readiness to review the appropriateness of the measures contained in this resolution, including the strengthening, modification, suspension or lifting of the measures, as may be needed at any time in light of developments.
On February 15, the 15-member body adopted unanimously resolution 2201, rejecting all acts of violence in Yemen to achieve political goals, and refrain from provocation and all unilateral actions to undermine the political transition.
In an urgent-opened meeting, the Security Council reiterated in its resolution, its call for all parties in Yemen to adhere to resolving their differences through dialogue and consultation, and expressing grave concern over the takeover by the Houthis of state media outlets.
