The Security Council Committee concerning Al-Qaeda approved late Thursday the US request to add Al-Qaeda-related Jabhat Al-Nusrah, which is fighting the Assad regime in Syria, to its Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo. The UN announced that that the Committee has added Jabhat Al-Nusrah to its Sanctions List, along with other entities such as Tanzim Qa'edat Al-Jihad fi Bilad Al-Rafidayn, and Jama'at Al-Tawhid Wa'al-Jihad in Iraq. The Committee's Al-Qaeda Sanctions List is updated regularly on the basis of relevant information provided by Member States and international and regional organizations. This is the thirteenth update of the List in 2013. Jabhat Al-Nusrah, which was listed by the US State Department earlier this year as a terrorist organisation for pledging allegiance to Al-Qaeda in Iraq, has thousands of foreign combatants fighting under its control in Syria.
