US ambassador visits Japan's Nagasaki atomic bomb site

US Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy has paid her first visit to Nagasaki in southwestern Japan. The US dropped an atomic bomb on the city in 1945. Kennedy was welcomed on Tuesday by Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue at the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, Japan's News (NHK) World reported. Museum officials said the ambassador looked closely at photos and other items that show the impact of the bombing. The ambassador later met 3 atomic bomb survivors. After the visit, Kennedy said she was deeply moved by her visit there and that her father, the late President John Kennedy, was proud that he was able to start the process of nuclear disarmament. She added that current US President Barack Obama is also striving to achieve that goal. Kennedy said that more needs to be done to rid the world of nuclear weapons. Masao Tomonaga, an A-bomb survivor who heads the Japanese Red Cross Nagasaki Genbaku Hospital, said Kennedy asked about the bomb's impact on the children of the survivors. Tomonaga said she appeared to be eager to work for nuclear disarmament and maybe for Obama to visit Nagasaki.
