US calls for measures to address crisis in Libya, Syria

The US called for measures to address challenges in Libya and Syria, said statements issued by the White House's National Security Council late Friday.
In this regard, National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice met at the White House with Libyan Foreign Minister Mohamed Al-Dayri, expressing the United States' condolences for the horrific attacks and resulting deaths in eastern Libya and all those who have been killed by terrorist groups in Libya.
She reiterated strong US support for the mediation efforts led by UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General Bernardino Leon and for a political resolution to the ongoing conflict in Libya.
She urged the swift formation of a national unity government that can partner with the international community to fight terrorist groups and conclude Libya's transition process, including the completion of a new constitution and holding elections for a new government under that constitution.
Rice also met with the United Nations' Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura. De Mistura updated Ambassador Rice on his efforts to achieve a freeze in Aleppo and expanded on his February 17th briefing to the UN Security Council. Ambassador Rice emphasized the United States' support for a political solution to Syria's civil war and for measures that would reduce the suffering of the Syrian people.
Ambassador Rice thanked De Mistura for the renewed energy he has brought to international efforts to bring an end to the war in Syria and discussed measures that the United States and other partners could take to support his efforts.
