US concerned about Egypt's demonstrations law

The US expressed concern about a new law restricting demonstrations in Egypt, saying it will not help Egypt in its transition towards democracy. "We share the view of Egyptian civil society representatives that this law, which imposes restrictions on Egyptians' ability to assemble peacefully and express their views, does not meet international standards and will not move Egypt's democratic transition forward," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said in a statement. "The United States wants Egypt's transition to an inclusive democracy to succeed," Psaki said after Egyptian security forces fired teargas to disperse university students who had defied the law, which was passed on Sunday. "We urge the interim government to respect individual rights and we urge that the new constitution protect such rights," the statement added.
