US denounces suicide attack in Egypt that kills top prosecutor

The United States on Monday condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the terrorist attack in Egypt, which left the country's Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat killed.

Barakat, 65, died Monday in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, from injuries sustained in a car bomb attack earlier in the day. Nine other people were injured in the blast that targeted the top prosecutor.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the Egyptian Government and to the families and friends of those who lost their lives," State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. "We also wish a speedy recovery to those who suffered injuries."

The bombing came after Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis militant group, an affiliate of the Islamic State regional militant group, posted a video clip Monday supposedly showing attacks in May that killed two judges and a prosecutor.

The group has vowed more attacks on judges in revenge for mass life and death sentences handed down to Islamists.

Kirby added that the U.S. stands firmly with the Egyptian government in its efforts to confront terrorism.
