US Marine to be retried for allegedly killing Iraqi civilian

A U.S. Marine freed on appeal after serving more than six years for the killing of an Iraqi civilian is scheduled to be retried, military officials said. A military judge at Camp Pendleton in California freed Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins III in June 2010 after he was imprisoned for the killing. He was released after a military court ruled his trial was unfair because his lawyer left the case just before the 2007 trial began. Hutchins is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Forces Central Command said Monday. He faces charges of murder, obstruction of justice, making false official statements and conspiracy to commit larceny. He and his seven-member squad allegedly killed a 52-year-old Iraqi man in the village of Hamdinaya in 2006 then planted a shovel and an AK-47 rifle in an effort to make it appear he was an insurgent, U-T San Diego reported.
