A senior US official has warned that North Korea is getting closer to putting a miniaturized nuclear warhead on an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the US mainland.
US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave the warning at a Washington think tank on Tuesday, according to NHK World website.
He said the North Korean issue will top the agenda for the trilateral summit in Washington on Thursday. The leaders of Japan, the US and South Korea will meet on the sidelines of a nuclear security summit.
He also said they will discuss each country's sanctions as well as cooperation to put pressure on the North.
Blinken called on China, which has influence on North Korea, to play a leading role in implementing the resolution.
He also referred to the possible deployment in South Korea of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, or THAAD. He expressed support for the deployment of the missile defense system.
