US postal Service wants cluster boxes in new developments

The U.S. Postal Service, in an effort to whittle away at costs, is ending door-to-door delivery in new housing developments, officials said. Developers, instead, are being asked to install clusters of mailboxes, the (South Florida) Sun Sentinel reported Friday. The Postal Service said door-to-door delivery costs an average of $353 per customer every year, more than twice the $160 it costs when cluster boxes are used. While the policy applies only to new construction, U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has proposed an amendment to the Postal Reform Act of 2013 that would allow the service to adopt the policy more widely. The House has not yet voted on the act.
