The United States strongly condemned the attacks on two Kenyan churches yesterday that claimed at least 17 lives. "The perpetrators of these attacks have shown no respect for human life and dignity, and must be brought to justice for these heinous acts," the White House said in a statement. The White House said that "peace and stability" were essential for Kenya's transition. "We support those who recognize Kenya's ethnic and religious diversity as one of the country's greatest strengths," the White House said. The attacks in Garissa in north-eastern Kenya early Sunday followed closely after the killing Friday of an aid worker and kidnapping of others in nearby Dadaab refugee camp, and an attack last weekend on a nightclub in seaside Mombasa. The masked gunmen simultaneously attacked the two churches during prayer services, opening fire and hurling grenades. At least 17 people were killed, including two police officers on duty. The attacks also left at least ten people in a critical condition at regional hospitals, according to the Red Cross.
