US to vet 1200 Syrians to fight Daesh

A US military programme has shortlisted around 1,200 Syrians for training to fight Daesh, the Pentagon has said.
Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said, the programme likely to start next month will vet Syrians for training and equipping them to fight Daesh at various areas outside Syria. The programme will train over 5,000 Syrians, of these 3,000 will be trained by end of 2015.
Kirby said no decision is taken on providing US air support to these Syrian fighters once they finish their training, "but we are aware that we will have some responsibilities" after the training is completed, he said.
Turkey is among three countries that have offered to host the training. It hopes the programme will help the opposition in its fight against Syrian President Bashar Al Assad.
Five months have passed since US President Barack Obama announced his intention to start training moderate Syrian opposition forces to fight Daesh.
