US warns Uganda of imminent terror attack

The U.S. Embassy in Uganda on Tuesday warned that it had intelligence information that the Ugandan capital Kampala is likely to face a terror attack in February or March. "The threat information indicates that a group of attackers is possibly in place and ready to strike targets inside Kampala in February or March. There are indications that the Uganda National Museum is one of the potential targets," the U.S. mission said in a statement posted on its website. The embassy said that although potential targets can change, U. S. citizens should avoid the Uganda National Museum and other crowded public places or events that are potential targets to terrorists. The warning comes amid security alertness in the country following similar police warnings that terrorists may attack. The Somali militant group Al-Shabaab, which is linked to Al- Qaida, has issued several warnings to Uganda that they will attack if the country does not withdraw its peacekeeping troops from Somalia. In July 2010, Al-Shabaab launched suicide bomb attacks, killing more than 80 people Kampala.
