US welcomes formation of new government in Lebanon

The United States on Saturday welcomed the formation of a new government in Lebanon and looked to it to address the country's needs amid growing regional violence. "We have long said that the people of Lebanon deserve a government that responds to their needs and protects their interests," Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement. Earlier Saturday, a new government led by new Prime Minister Tammam Salam was formed in Lebanon, after a 10-month deadlock. The new government announcement was the result of a compromise reached by the pro-Syrian March 8 camp and the opposition March 14 camp, and witnessed a complete shuffle in the portfolios. "We look to today's announcement to be an important first step in addressing the political uncertainty that has hampered Lebanon in recent years," Kerry said. The U.S. reiterates its strong commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty, security, and stability, the top U.S. envoy said. Kerry also called on the new government to uphold the policy of disassociation from the Syrian and other foreign conflicts, which is "the best way to ensure Lebanon's stability and security." The U.S. looks forward to working effectively with the new government to bolster peace, stability and prosperity in Lebanon, Kerry added.
