Venezuela rejects Kerry's interventionist intentions

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez on Thursday urged U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to cease his "interventionist intentions" against Venezuela and described his recent comments on Caracas as "unacceptable".

"Secretary @JohnKerry cease your interventionist intentions in our country; those are impermissible and contrary to International Law," said Rodriguez in a series of Twitter posts.

Kerry on Wednesday described the political situation in Venezuela as "very problematic" and called for the presence of international observers in the parliamentary elections next December, which Rodriguez has rebuked.

"The times when the U.S. dictated the rules in Venezuela are over thanks to the anti-imperialist action of the Venezuelan people," added the foreign minister in another message.

She also endorsed the democratic and sovereign character of Venezuela, to which she attributed the efforts of late President Hugo Chavez and independence hero, Simon Bolivar.

"The regularization of the bilateral diplomatic relations between Venezuela and the U.S. shall be based on mutual respect and international law," said Rodriguez.

Venezuela and the United States have had tense political relations since late socialist President Hugo Chavez came to power in 1999 and the two nations have not exchanged ambassadors since 2010.

The tensions between Washington and Caracas arose just hours before Kerry's presence in the opening ceremony of the U.S. embassy in Cuba after the two countries reestablished their diplomatic ties.

Kerry has confirmed that in his meetings on Friday with Cuban authorities he would address the Venezuelan issues and the parliamentary elections scheduled for later this year.
