Venezuelan president posts video of alleged violent protesters

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Sunday tweeted a video allegedly showing violent protestors in recent anti-government demonstrations in the capital. "Clear video of violent groups," Maduro wrote next to a link to the video of the "guarimbas," as political troublemakers are known in Venezuela. The video shows young men, some wearing hoods or gas masks and black gloves, setting up road blocks along main avenues in a district known as Chacao and defacing an image of late President Hugo Chavez. In one scene, a young man in jeans and a blue sweater, carrying a bright green bag, sets fire to a barricade at a city plaza. On Saturday evening, Maduro lamented the death of Santiago Enrique Pedroza, a 29-year-old delivery worker, who was killed at a barricade set up along the city's Romulo Gallegos Avenue and became the latest victim in the latest spate of turmoil. According to Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez Torres, the young man was beheaded by a metal cable strung across the street by "these fascist guarimberos" when he passed there riding a motorcycle. Maduro announced that authorities "have already identified those who put the metal cable there." "They are going to jail," added the president. He has also ordered the investigation of a retired army general, Angel Vivas, on suspicion of inciting violence. In addition, Rodriguez urged opposition leaders, including governors and mayors from the opposition camp, to deploy security personnel to reestablish public order in their regions. President of the National Assembly Diosdado Cabello said authorities have so far seized 360 molotov cocktails, 16 kilos of gunpowder, 200 liters of gasoline in plastic bottles and other materials that can be used to make incendiary devices. Venezuela has been beset with social turmoil since Feb. 12, and violent protests in Caracas have left nine people dead and 137 others injured.
