Vietnam's police chief Tran Dai Quang was inaugurated as president on Saturday to serve a five-year term.
Tran Dai Quang, who led the Ministry of Public Security, was ratified by the National Assembly in Hanoi 460 out 465 of the ruling Communist Party members voting in his favor.
The 59-year-old Quang was nominated to lead the single-party state in January.
In his inaugural speech, Quang said he was "determined to strengthen the economic reform and integration process." He also pledged to defend the country's "territorial integrity".
Vietnam's presidency is among the most powerful positions in the country, with Communist Party Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong acting as the de-facto head of state.
Incoming Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc is expected to be formally confirmed on April 7.
