Washington welcomes resumption of inter-Libyan dialogue in Morocco

The US welcomed an announcement by the United Nations for the resumption of inter-Libyan political dialogue under the aegis of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG) Bernardino Leon on June 8 in Morocco.

The Libyan crisis "can be solved only through a negotiated political settlement", Marie Harf, Senior Adviser of Strategic Communications at the State Department, said in a press briefing.

The Libyan stakeholders "will work on finalizing agreements on the formation of a national unity government that will preserve the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya", said the US official.

A unified government is the best guarantee to guard against the threat of terrorism which is worsening by taking advantage of the current political situation, she said, adding that the Libyan people "will greatly benefit from the return of peace and stability in the country".
