At least eight people were killed after Taliban suicide bombers and gunmen launched an attack on provincial police chief house in Spinboldak district of southern Afghan province of Kandahar on Sunday morning, sources said.
The casualties included one child, one police and six attackers, deputy to Interior Ministry Mohammad Ayub Salangi said in his twitter account.
The provincial police chief General Abdul Raziq was not in the building when the attack took place, according to local sources.
Earlier reports said 10 militants were involved in the attack in the district bordering Pakistan.
"Two militants set off their suicide jackets. The militants also fired on the nearby district police station. Four militants were killed by security forces," provincial police spokesman Zia Durrani told Xinhua.
Three border policemen were also wounded during the clash lasting for hours, he said.
The Taliban insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched an annual rebel offensive against Afghan government forces and nearly 50,000 NATO-led troops stationed in the country in mid-May.
On Saturday evening, four civilians were killed and four others wounded when a motorcycle bomb went off in Marja district bazaar of the neighboring Helmand province.
More than 1,560 civilians were killed and nearly 3,290 others wounded in conflicts and Taliban-led attacks in the first six months of 2014, according to official figures released by UN mission in the country.
