95 injured in crane collapse check out of hospital

The Saudi health directorate said on Saturday that 95 out of a total of 238 people were injured in a crane collapse in Saudi Arabia checked out of hospital.

On Friday, a crane collapsed in the Muslim holy city of Mecca because of stormy weather. Some 107 pilgrims were killed in the accident which took place at a time when hundreds of thousands of Muslims from all over the world gather for the annual hajj (pilgrimage) expected to begin on September 21.

In a statement Saturday, the directorate said it ordered medical staff back-up from Jeddah and Taif cities.

The situation is stable and all hospitals were geared up for the hajj season, the statement said, noting that there is continued coordination between the directorate and other governmental institutions.

Meanwhile, Mecca Emir Adviser Hisham al Faleh said the committee – formed under orders of Mecca Emir Khaled al Faisal – convened on Friday to review the initial reports on the crane collapse.

Specialized Saudi engineers were tasked with standing on the reasons behind the accident and the project's contractor was ordered to check cranes' safety measures.
