
A total of 3635 mines, dating from the colonial period, were discovered and destroyed in April 2014 as part of the mine clearance operations conducted by the People’s National Army (ANP) along the eastern and western borders of the country, said official sources on Monday. The Army units discovered and destroyed 676 antipersonnel mines, 671 anti-group mines and 12 flare mines in the 2nd military region, in addition to 2,216 anti-personnel mines, 41 anti-group mines and 19 flare mines in the 5th military region. Up to 30 April 2014, a total of 727,884 mines, including 613,718 anti-personnel mines, 109,713 anti-group mines and 4,453 flare mines were discovered and destroyed, the source added.
