Cairo - Arab Today

The Arab League (AL) Council approved on Thursday a bill on the latest developments in Syria, a step before discussions at the ministerial level on Sunday.

During a meeting held at the level of AL permanent representatives to review Syria's draft resolution, the council voiced concern over the deterioration of the Syrian crisis and its repercussions on the state's security and stability.

Also, the council expressed its worry about the ongoing sufferings of the Syrian people who have been forced to leave their country due to the destruction, violence, murder and heinous crimes committed against civilians, in flagrant violations of the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law.

In its 144 session on Thursday, the council welcomed steps taken by some European countries recently to take in a number of Syrian refugees.

It called on the UNSC to assume its full responsibility for dealing with the Syrian crisis.

Furthermore, the council renewed its call on Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al Araby to continue consultations and contacts with UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura and all parties concerned to reach a political solution to the crisis according to Geneva conference on Syria held in June 30th, 2012.

The AL representatives welcomed initiatives and exerted efforts to unite Syrian opposition factions to settle the crisis.

They strongly condemned the terrorist attacks carried out by Daesh militants and other terror groups against civilians as well as the destruction of archaeological and historical sites in Syria.

They referred to the UNSC resolutions on banning the use of chemical weapons in Syria by all rival parties and called for establishing a joint mechanism for identifying who are responsible for using these outlawed weapons in Syria and bringing them to justice.

The council urged the UNSC to shoulder its responsibility for activating the items of its resolutions on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and take the necessary measures to impose an immediate cease-fire, all acts of violence and the indiscriminate use of heavy weapons in populated areas, including the shelling of buildings with rockets and explosive barrels.

They called on the UNSC to help in the entry of humanitarian aid and convoys to all besieged and affected Syrian areas.
