
A force of the Algerian army on Friday thwarted an attempt to smuggle huge amounts of weapons hidden in a cache near the borders into the country, the Algerian Ministry of National Defense said.
A 14.5 mm gun machine and another of 12.7 mm, three Kalashnikov machine pistols, two MAT-49 machine pistols, one semi-automatic rifle and three repeating rifles were seized in the operation, the ministry said in a statement carried by Algerian Press Service (APS).
The operation also resulted in the seizure of five 82-mm shells, 380 defensive and offensive grenades, 18 smoke canisters, 7,774 bullets of different calibers, three ammunition chargers of 7.82-mm and three ammunition belts of 14.5 and 12.mm, it added.
