Chief Prosecutor, Head of Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Nayef Yusuf, said that the SIU had received a notification from the Public Prosecution on 20 Aug 2014, which stated that a hunger strike over mistreatment had been staged by detainees at the Dry Dock Detention Center (DDDC).
He added that an SIU member had been tasked to investigate the situation in DDDC and to meet the strikers, who unanimously agreed to the cause of the strike was the thin transparent separation barrier that separates between them and their visitors. While seven of the detainees alleged that they had been beaten by the detention guards during detention period. The SIU had questioned them and assigned the SIU coroner to sign a medical examination of a complainant who claimed injury and to determine how and why it had occurred, if any. The SIU also requested the judicial police's investigation report about the incident.
