Court dismisses Badei's appeal to change judges in 'Rabaa operations room' case

The Court of Appeals dismissed on Monday a request by Muslim Brotherhood supreme guide Mohamed Badei to change the judges panel for his retrial along with 36 Muslim Brotherhood defendants in the case known in the media as Rabaa Operations Room.

The defendants are accused of forming an operations room during the Rabaa el Adaweya sit-in dispersal with the aim of spreading chaos in the country by breaking into police stations, government institutions, private property and churches”.

They are also accused of joining a banned group and circulating fake news with the aim of undermining public security.

Earlier in April, Giza Criminal Court sentenced to death Mohamed Badie, the Muslim Brotherhood's supreme guide, and 13 other leading members of the group, for inciting murder in the case known as "Rabaa operations room."

In the previous session, the court referred the death sentences to Egypt's Grand Mufti for revision. The referral of the sentences to the Mufti is the first step in the legal process required to enact a death sentence. The Mufti's decision is not binding.

Later on, the Cassation Court accepted appeals against all verdicts issued against the defendants and ordered a retrial.
