A criminal was killed Thursday in a joint security force offensive in Irbid governorate about 70 km north of the capital Amman, according to the Public Security Department (PSD).
A joint force from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Gendarmerie were searching for a suspect listed as ‘very dangerous’ for being involved in theft, robbery, drug trafficking and firing on citizens, according to a PSD statement.
The criminal was hiding in a remote wooded area and sprayed bullets from a Kalashnikov as soon as he saw the police. The police fired back and in the shooting the fugitive and another person were hit by bullets, added the statement.
Both the injured persons were taken to the hospital, where the criminal was declared dead while the other was recovering.
The PSD said the person had 49 criminal cases against him, and was also declared an outlaw for being involved in 15 cases of attempted murder and sexual assault.
A Kalashnikov, 2 pistols, magazines and ammunition were seized and the PSD has begun further investigations.
