
Tunisian presidential candidate Beji Caid Essebsi thanked Tunisians who voted in the Sunday's run-off election.
In a televised speech, Essebsi thanked his rival incumbent president Moncef Marzouki.
Polling stations closed at 6 p.m. local time, with final results due tomorrow.
Beji Caid Essebsi lead the race in first round of presidential balloting on Nov. 23 with 39 percent of the vote.
The politician leads the secular Nidaa Tounes party, which won parliamentary elections in October and will nominate the next prime minister.
About 47 percent of voters had turned out to vote by 5 p.m., the state-run TAP news agency reported, citing Nabil Bafoun, a member of the Independent Higher Authority for the Elections.
