EU pledges €100m to Libyan unity government.

The EU has pledged to allocate 100 million euros in support of a new unity government proposed to be formed in Libya.

In a press statement on Friday, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the EU was ready to introduce the aid package to the proposed new unity government in Libya to help it meet the needs of the Libyan people immediately.

Mogherini voiced the EU support for the new UN envoy for Libya Martin Kobler and his efforts in rallying the needed support for the unity government, and restoring Libya's stability.

The statement also urged all the Libyan warring parties to have the courage to act to achieve progress in the consensus government agreement.

Libya has had two administrations since August last year when a militia alliance overran the capital, forcing the internationally recognized government to take refuge in the east.

Former UN envoy Bernardino Leon had proposed forming a new government under Fayez al Sarraj, a deputy in the Tripoli parliament, that also included three deputy prime ministers; one from the west, one from the east and one from the south of the country.
