Ministry of Foreign Affairs commemorated Wednesday in Algiers the National Mujaheed Day (20 August 1955/1956), with a symbolic ceremony attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ramtane Lamamra.
The commemoration of the double historical anniversary started by a national flag raising ceremony, after which Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra, along with two mujahideen (liberation war veterans), laid a wreath at a stele set up in tribute to the martyrs of the Algerian Revolution.
Mujaheed and former Foreign Affairs ministry's executive, Rabah Mechehoud, read Al Fatiha (first chapter of the Noble Qur'an) in memory of the martyrs.
August 20, 1955 and 1956 represents a historic turning point in Algerian people's struggle for liberation from French colonial rule.
On 20 August 1955 the Algerian people carried out an uprising in Constantine (431-km east of Algiers), savagely suppressed by the French colonial administration which committed a collective massacre.
On 20 August 1956 the Algerians fighting against French occupation held the Soummam Conference in Bejaia (263-km east of Algiers), which paved the way for a successful revolution and lay the foundations of the independent Algerian State.
The Declaration of November 1st, 1954 and the Charter of the Soummam Conference are the foundational texts of the modern and free Algerian State.
