The funeral of a slain border guards’ officer, who was killed in the western borders, was held on Friday in his hometown of Sharqia governorate, northern Cairo.
Captain Mahmoud Mohamed was killed on Thursday during a fire exchange with smugglers amid their attempt to smuggle huge amounts of arms, ammunition and drugs near the western border line.
Thousands of residents, officers, and senior security leaders took part in the funeral, chanting slogans demanding retribution from the killers.
Spokesman for the Armed Forces Brigadier General Mohamed Samir said on Thursday that the border guards thwarted an attempt to smuggle huge amounts of arms, ammunition and drugs near the western border line.
Two smugglers, an officer and a non-commissioned officer were killed in an exchange fire between the troops and traffickers.
Two trucks carrying huge amounts of weapons, ammunition and narcotic materials were destroyed in the operation, the spokesman added.
