Kuwait's First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah Monday hoped the Egyptian presidential election would help the North AFrican country regain its leading regional and international role.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is committed to supporting Egypt before and after last week's elections, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled told a joint news conference with GCC Secretary General Abdullateef Al-Zayani following a one-day foreign ministers' meeting.
"We will be happy to work with Egypt after the elections in order to continue the roadmap," said Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled.
Asked about His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's visit to Iran, the foreign minister said the Iranian people were looking forward for cooperation with neighboring countries. "They have express that in the elections that lead to electing of President Hassan Rouhani." Rouhani, soon after his election, sent "positive signals" for the neighboring countries specially Saudi Arabia, he said. There have been positive signals from Saudi Arabia towards Iran, he noted. The two countries are bound to diplomatic relations.
"The GCC countries and Iran share this region, and the US is an ally of the GCC countries (but), and has no role in relations of independent countries which are keen on their interest and their security and stability," he said.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said the Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal invited his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif to attend the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on June 16. Zarif would not attend because he would be busy with the nuclear talks with the P5+1 group.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, meanwhile, said the foreign ministers discussed Egypt and the importance of unity of Libya.
Al-Zayani described the meeting as "fruitful and constructive." The foreign ministers approved mechanisms of strategic dialogues with India, South Korea and Canada
