Some believe that the current applicable traffic laws in the country are strict and severe, however, at the same time, their effective role in the reduction of accidents and fatalities can not be denied as shown by statistics from the General Directorate of Traffic.
Local traffic laws have been keen since the issuance of the first systematic traffic law number 67/1976 to take all measures to reduce accidents and cases of deaths, especially with the increasing number of vehicles and the extension of road networks in the country.
Studies conducted on the local road networks showed that such roads can absorp nearly 950,000 vehicles, while the number of registered vehicles in the country is currently standing at some 1.92 million vehicles, a matter that has led to increased traffic congestion and the numbers of accidents and citations.
These studies prompted the Ministry of the Interior to take a number of measures to reduce the growing number of vehicles through amending regulations of the Traffic Act, including the tightening of penalties against the grave breaches, as well as reconsidering the process of drivers license issuance for residents.
The ministry has embarked on making several steps aimed at reducing the traffic violations and accidents through the installation of advanced modern radars and cameras on highways and roads for the detection of irregularities, particularly violations pertinent to overspeeding.
The ministry's statistics showed significant decrease in the number of fatalities as a result of road accidents in the past three years, with 555 fatality cases reported in 2012 against 333 cases till last September of this year, in addition to 8,000 road accidents which dwindled to only 1,200 during the same period
