Two gunmen who opened fire at former mufti of Egypt Dr. Ali Gomaa earlier Friday fled the scene after his security guards exchanged fire with them, an official source with the Interior Ministry said Friday.
The two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at Gomaa as he was entering el Fadel mosque near his house in the 6th of October City to perform Friday congregational prayers.
His bodyguard was slightly injured, a security source said.
Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar formed an investigation team to quickly determine the identities of the gunmen and arrest them, the source further said.
Checkpoints have been set up in the vicinity of the area of the attack, the source added.
