The inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Wednesday said that it will send a mission to Egypt on February 28-March 4 with a view to assessing the top needs of the Egyptian House of Representatives.
In a released statement, the IPU indicated that the results of the assessment will constitute the basis for an integrated assistance program from the IPU to the Egyptian legislative body and its members.
The move comes after talks that were held on Tuesday at the Geneva-based IPU between IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong and Egyptian Speaker Ali Abdel Aal.
The IPU will maintain extending all assistance to the Egyptian House to enable it to be a viable and effective legislative body that could meet the requirements of democracy, added the statement.
The IPU also pledged, at the talks with Abdel Aal, to support setting up an institute for training Egyptian MPs, the statement indicated, lauding the formation of the new Egyptian parliament where the age of around 25 percent of its members ranges between 25-40 years old.
