Jordan and Iraq on Saturday discussed procedures to facilitate transport of goods by trucks through Al Karamah Border Crossing, the joint border between the two countries.
The issue was discussed during a meeting held at the Interior Ministry, headed by the ministry's Secretary-General, Governor Samir Mubaidin, on the Jordanian side, and Iraqi Director General of border crossings, Maj. Gen. Essam Saleh. Some other Jordanian and Iraqi officials were also present.
Mubaidin called for Iraq to open two additional lanes in order to ensure the quick and smooth flow of goods and the unhindered entry of trucks.
He pointed out that commercial transportation between the two countries is a particular concern of the Jordanian government, and many ministerial and technical meetings have been held in this regard.
The meeting addressed a number of issues and actions to be taken to facilitate the entry of trucks and ensure that these do not remain parked for long periods on either side of the border, particularly trucks laden with food or agricultural, industrial and medical supplies, which may be damaged as result of waiting for longer periods. The issue of increasing the number of customs staff at border posts was also discussed.
Saleh praised Jordan's cooperation to overcome the obstacles related to the entry of trucks either way, stressing that there are no fundamental problems in this regard, but most of them come as observations that have been partly resolved.
The two sides agreed to continue coordination to promptly address any urgent matters that may arise.
