UN envoy to Libya Bernardino Léon stressed on Wednesday that helping the unrest-hit Libya form a national unity government is top priority at the time being to stand against the growing number of extremists operating in the country.
Speaking to MENA before leaving Egypt after the end of a day-long visit, he said Daesh and the other terrorist groups in Libya are taking advantage of the current chaos and rising political tensions to take control of the country.
The international community should take immediate moves to confront terrorism and should be well aware that what happened in Iraq and Syria by Daesh militants could be simply repeated in Libya, he said.
He stressed that dialogue is the only effective way to reach a peaceful solution to the Libyan crisis.
He expressed appreciation for continued Egyptian support of Libya, saying Egypt is playing an important role to reach stability in the country.
He added that his talks with Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister for Neighbors' Affairs Osama Magdoub and other ministry officials tackled ways of fighting terrorism, especially after the 21 Egyptian Copts who were beheaded by Daesh in Libya.
About the new round of political dialogue that will be held in Morocco on Thursday, he said it will mainly focus on the formation of a national unity government, an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of all militias from cities.
