Libyan factions receive final text of peace deal

UN Special Envoy to Libya Bernardino León said on Tuesday that he has handed over Libya's warring factions a final text of a peace accord to end their political conflict, urging them to accept it.

"We finished our work, we have a text that it is a final text. So our part in the process is now finished," Leon said surrounded by Western diplomats in the Moroccan city of Skhirat, where much of the recent negotiation has taken place.

"It is up now to the participants to react to this text, but not in terms of adding more comments or getting back to something to negotiate.", according to Leon.

Leon had set September 20 as a date for a deal. He told reporters on Monday that he hoped the factions would now return to reach a final agreement after the Eid Al-Adha Muslim celebrations this week and before October 20, when the mandate of the elected parliament ends.

With regard to the deal items, Leon said that five persons have been named to assume senior posts in the new authority, pointing to the end of the negotiations' path.

The Libyan rival factions will return to Moroccan city of Skhirat after Eid Al-Adha feast to discuss forming a united government.

The ball now is in the court of Libyan factions who have to do more to render the dialogue a success, he asserted.
