Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammad Abdulaziz failed to arrive in Tunisia to take part in the ministerial meeting for Libya's neighbors, which started Sunday and lasts for two days.
The Libyan minister could not make it due the closure of Libyan air space over Tripoli International Airport by Libyan authorities for security reasons, Tunisia Press Agency (TBA) quoted Tunisian foreign ministry spokesman Mukhtar Al-Shawashi as saying.
Heavy fighting between rival militias vying for control of Libya's main airport in Tripoli has left at least seven people dead and halted all flights.
"It is premature to say whether the Libyan minister would participate in the meeting or not," he said, pointing out to "other means' that would enable the minister to arrive to Tunisia.
The meeting, to take place in Hammamet, south of Tunis, is expected to gather top diplomats from Egypt, Algeria, Sudan, Chad and Niger.
Representatives from the Arab League and the African Union are also expected to attend, according to a a statement by the Tunisian foreign ministry.
The leaders will "exchange points of view on the forms of support that the neighboring states can offer ... (to help) launch a Libyan national dialogue ... and to strengthen state institutions and the democratic transition process in Libya," the statement noted.
