Parliament committee calls for arming Libyan army against Daesh

The infighting between Libyan factions and their battles with terrorist organizations, mainly Daesh, led to fractioning the country, the House of Representatives' Arab Affairs Committee said.

The suspicious role undertaken by Western powers, represented by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in Libya had fueled the conflict and undermined state institutions before leaving the country in complete chaos to serve the interests of certain international powers, the committee said during a meeting Monday.

There is no conflict between supporting the political solution to the Libyan crisis and building the capabilities of legitimate institutions, especially arming the Libyan Armed Forces to be stronger against the threat of Daesh, it said.

The committee called on the Foreign Ministry to continue moves, under its May presidency of the United Nations Security Council and present chairmanship of the Arab summit, on lifting a ban on arming the official Libyan army.
