The Egyptian House of Representatives expressed on Friday reservations about the European Parliament's decision over the alleged murder of an Italian student in Cairo.
The 28-year-old Italian PhD student Giulio Regeni was in Egypt researching the development of Egyptian trade unions when he disappeared on 25 January, 2016. On February 3, Regeni’s body was found on a road on the outskirts of Cairo.
In a statement, the House of Representatives described the claims mentioned in the statement as "false".
It called on European countries to stop interfering in Egypt's domestic affairs, and to await results of investigations into the murder case of the Italian student.
A European parliament resolution had condemned the suspected torture and murder of Regeni, saying the killing ought to serve as a “wake-up call” for the EU.
The resolution, which was overwhelmingly passed by a vote of 588-10, with 59 abstentions, on Thursday, called for the suspension of any form of security cooperation with Egyptian authorities and condemned arms deals between Egypt and France, Germany and the UK.
