Kataeb Party MP, Elie Marouni, said on Tuesday that the Lebanese people pinned great hope on the endorsement of a new electoral law, highlighting the need to have a new version be ratified within the coming few days.
However, the lawmaker feared that political quotas were thwarting all attempts to reach agreement over a new legislative law.
"Delving into a new round of legislative elections based on the 1960 law contradicts with all the vows and promises that were made to the people," Marouni told "Al-Fajr" radio station.
He called on Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, to propose all the suggested election law versions for a general assembly vote.
"Let the law that garners the biggest number of votes be endorsed," Marouni added, deeming political consensus over a unified electoral formula farfetched due to the fact that "all the political parties are seeking their own interests."
Touching on the unending abductions in the Bekaa region, the lawmaker pushed for the adoption of a comprehensive security plan that covers the entire region, away from any sort of political umbrella.
