Rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into central and southern Israel on Wednesday, a day after a temporary truce between Israel and Hamas had collapsed.
On Wednesday evening, a rocket salvo was fired towards the greater Tel Aviv area in central Israel. The Iron Dome anti- missile battery intercepted two rockets in the area, the Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson confirmed. Dozens of rockets were fired at southern Israel throughout the day.
"Five rockets were fired at Israel this evening," the IDF spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday evening. "One was intercepted above Tel Aviv metropolitan area," it said.
According to the IDF, over 180 rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip, 131 hit Israel and 34 intercepted, since the temporary ceasefire was breached on Tuesday afternoon.
The Israeli security cabinet met for four hours on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the recent developments, without releasing any statement as of yet.
The Israeli Air Force continued to strike targets in the Gaza Strip in response to the rocket fire. According to Palestinian medical sources, approximately twenty two people have died in Gaza since the ceasefire's collapse on Tuesday and more than 100 were wounded.
Prior to the current round of escalation, more than 2000 Palestinians were killed and 10,000 injures as a result of the offensive in Gaza, which started on July 8.
Meanwhile, 64 Israeli soldiers died in clashes with Palestinian militants in Israel's ground incursion to the strip, and three civilians died from rocket and mortar fire.
